The Transcultural Family Work Forum

The Transcultural Family Work Forum (previously the Meriden Cultural Diversity Special Interest Group) is a quarterly meeting for those wishing to highlight and work on the issues relating to those Black and Minority Ethnic (BME) families who have experience of mental health problems.

The Forum aims to ensure that BME families are acknowledged and 'visible' within mental health services. It recognises the diversity of families and aims to promote equal access to those interventions that ensure families are informed, supported and included.
The forum is currently well attended, with representation from a number of the Trusts across the West Midlands, the voluntary sector and carers. The group would welcome representation from all of the 13 Trusts within the remit of the programme, together with any others who share an interest in this area.

The role and purpose of the forum has been summarised within its mission statement. This refers to the group's function in terms of networking, resource provision, training and service development.

In addition, the group has been influential in terms of the Meriden Learning Events, which focus on Cultural Diversity. These events have been hugely successful and oversubscribed on each occasion. There have been 2 events to date and a further is planned for 2006.

Partners In Care Campaign

The Partners in Care Campaign was the campaign of the previous president of the Royal College of Psychiatrists, Dr Mike Shooter, and the Princess Royal Trust for Carers. The aim of the campaign was to highlight carers' issues and to improve services for carers. The campaign drew to a close in September 2005, but the values of the campaign will continue to impact on and improve services.

The Meriden Programme, West Midlands Carers in Partnership and the West Midlands Division of the Royal College of Psychiatrists supported each Trust in the West Midlands to hold an event to highlight the campaign.

Several Trusts have held events and reports of these are available below. Some Trusts are still planning events. If you would like more information about the campaign and the developments that have been achieved, please log on to www.rcp.ac.uk. If you would like further information or discussion about the Partners in Care campaign in the West Midlands please contact Martin Atchison at Martin.Atchison@bsmht.nhs.uk.

Special Interest Group for In-patient Services

The next meeting is 20th March 2006 at The Uffculme Centre, Moseley and anyone wishing to attend can contact Sam.Farooq@bsmht.nhs.uk or telephone 0121 678 2896.

The group consists of staff, carers and service users representing in-patient services across the West Midlands who are interested in working with families and carers and also want to improve the experience of carers when they have a person in hospital.

The group has been identifying issues that are specific to in-patient settings and which need to be considered in order to achieve successful implementation of family work in these settings. The group has developed tools and training packages to support family work within in-patient services.

There has been good attendance at the meetings and this has enabled views and ideas to be shared. We are currently discussing issues relating to ward rounds and confidentiality.

Do you live or work in the West Midlands? Would you like to be part of a group that can shape and develop practice to support family work in in-patient services?

If you would like more information about the group please contact Chris Mansell at Chris.Mansell@bsmht.nhs.uk.
